About the Author

Leslie Yarbrough on the trail

Leslie (Fletcher) Yarbrough

Thru-Hiker · Chef · Radio Nerd

By day, Leslie Yarbrough works as a chef at a restaurant outside Nashville — running the line, plating dishes, and keeping the dinner rush moving. By (late) night, you'll find her huddled over a VLF receiver she built from scratch, trying to catch the faint radio hiss of the ionosphere.

In 2016, she traded the heat of the kitchen for 2,200 miles of Appalachian Trail — solo, with a backpack, a sense of humor, and a healthy appreciation for duct tape. The result was Walk Upon A Time, her #1 Amazon Bestselling memoir.

She lives on a farm outside Nashville with her dog, two cats, a growing pile of radio gear, and a quiet obsession with the ionosphere. She's also hiked the CDT and still can't believe she gets to call this life her own.

Loved It

This is a journal. A day to day account of the author's hike. Not some introspective book on one's journey. I found myself Googling the shelters where she camped or stopped. I am a backpacker myself, but two nights in the woods and three days hiking is enough for me. I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

Head strong will get you places

Really enjoyed this book. I felt like I was there. Her descriptions were so good — not over the top but like I was there. She proved what a strong person she is by getting sick and pushing through it. I read a lot of books on the AT and this is one of the best.

I love this book!

I am so glad that Leslie took the time to keep a journal on her thru-hike of the AT, and I am glad that she published the accounts of her hard times as well as the good times. I hope she will publish her journals from her thru hikes of the CDT and the PCT!!!! If she does, I will buy them!!!!

Made me think it's doable

Very positive attitude throughout despite unpredictable and rough times. Loved her simple approach to the days tasks and soaking in everything each section brings to the hikers. She gave a good balance of the physical and emotional challenges/rewards daily.
