This is a journal. A day to day account of the author's hike. Not some introspective book on one's journey. I found myself Googling the shelters where she camped or stopped. I am a backpacker myself, but two nights in the woods and three days hiking is enough for me. I thoroughly enjoyed this book.
Really enjoyed this book. I felt like I was there. Her descriptions were so good — not over the top but like I was there. She proved what a strong person she is by getting sick and pushing through it. I read a lot of books on the AT and this is one of the best.
I am so glad that Leslie took the time to keep a journal on her thru-hike of the AT, and I am glad that she published the accounts of her hard times as well as the good times. I hope she will publish her journals from her thru hikes of the CDT and the PCT!!!! If she does, I will buy them!!!!
Very positive attitude throughout despite unpredictable and rough times. Loved her simple approach to the days tasks and soaking in everything each section brings to the hikers. She gave a good balance of the physical and emotional challenges/rewards daily.
